Intelligent species
Starfleet is an equal opportunity employer. No members, officer or enlisted, are discriminated by species, diet, sex or lack thereof, number of mandibles, state of metamorphosis or colour of the carapace. For practical reasons most Starfleet vessels are manned by humanoids with roughly similar demands of quarters and respiratory air. Some species, like Vulcans and Andorians, have been granted special dispensation to outfit their own vessels.

| Tellarites are sturdy, humanoid species with porcine features. They are also the only known subterranean culture ever to attain space flight. Tellarite sense of smell and hearing are advanced, while their eyesight is sub par. Tellarites are natural engineers and valued diplomats, as they are profoundly argumentative. Tellar Prime is one of the founding members of the Federation. | The Vulcans were born in the dry wastelands of 40 Eridani A. They are naturally adapted to their scorching environment with protective inner eylids which filter sand and radiation. They are also able to survive long times without water. Fast heart rate and dilated blood vessels play a key role in regulating Vulcan body temperature. Vulcan blood is copper-based, giving it a green color and making it extremely effective in utilizing smaller amounts of oxygen available in the Vulcan homeworld’s low pressure and irradiated environment. Vulcans are highly resilient, strong and possess strange mental powers. Their society is guided by logic and detachment from all emotion (kohlinar), but they are known to lose all restraint during the mating season (pon farr). | Terrans are youngest of the founding races of the Federation, but their strong cultural aggression, rapid breeding and natural curiosity has made them the leaders of the Federation and vanguard of its exploratory activities. First Contact between Humans and Vulcans was established in 2063, after which Terra rapidly gained faster-than-light capability. Terra has become the primary economic and military contributor to Starfleet. Human colonies are so ubiquitous that the critics of the Federation have named it ”the homo sapiens club”. Today, Terra has more than 500 colonies, stations and outposts across the Alpha Quadrant. Human settlement in Alpha Centauri declared independence in 2119 and was later accepted as one of the founding members of the Federation on par with Terra. |

| The amazons of Omega Cygni are matriarchal, empathic and telepathic humanoids. Due to extreme sexual dimorphism, males of their species are small, feral and short-lived: they die soon as they copulate. First contact was made in 2220, but they did not join the Federation until 2259. | The Andorians are aggressive insect-like humanoids with a high concentration of cobalt in their blood, giving them blue skin. Their articulated antennae observe their surroundings. The Andorian species are unique in that it is composed of four sexes, chans, thaans, zhens and shens, all of which are needed in reproduction. They thrive in icy environments. Andorians are founding members of the Federation and largest contributors to the Starfleet in spite of their sparse population. | The Caitians are sentient felines from planet Ferasa in 15 Lyncis. Their culture is cooperative, clan-based and very open to foreigners. They are best employed as translators and linguists. First contact was made in 2249 and they joined the Federation a few years later. | A race of extremely intelligent insectoids resembling the scarab beetle, Kaferians maintain a closely knit, social structure largely devoted to biochemical pursuits. Their natural spatiotemporal sense make them perfect astronavigators. |

| According to a common theory, the Romulans are ancient offshoots of the Vulcan race who rejected the teachings of Surak during the Great Awakening. They are secretive, belligerent, and technologically advanced, being known for their mysterious cloaking device capable of rendering starships invisible to all sensors. Romulans believe in the Road to the Stars, which necessitates Romulan expansion through the Galaxy. The Romulan Neutral Zone was established after Earth-Romulan war in 2160. | The Klingons are fierce humanoid warrior species from the planet Q’onos (pronounced Kronos). Their empire was founded in the 9th century by First Emperor Kahless the Unforgettable. Klingon society is ingrained with ritual and tradition. Breaking from observances are considered a grievous insult to society. The Empire is ruled by a number of Great Houses, who compete in honour and dignity. Klingon anatomy is not well known, but there are a great deal of multiple redundancy in their organs, and they are able to survive grievous injuries in battle. Klingons don’t think much of other species: If vigorous, they are honourable enemies or efficient battle thralls; if stagnant or weak, they are expected to act subservient, pay tribute and accept Klingon overlordship. A state of cold war exists between the Klingon Empire and the Federation. | The Orions are humanoids from Rigel VIII. They are known for their distinctive green, grey or ruddy skin. An ancient race, once they harbored a highly developed civilization whose history has drawn great interest from Federation historians and archaeologists alike. They are infamous as interstellar capitalists: Orion children are born as employers of the Orion Corporation and liable to pay for their feeding, lodging, tuition and air they breathe - Orion homeworld Rigel VIII has been a hub of galactic commerce so many a millenia that they have lost their entire atmosphere. Klingons consider the Orions as khesterex, a dying or decadent culture not even worth of conquering, which reveals that the Klingons do not understand economic power at all. The Federation has banned sale and transport of Orion slaves, but slavery still thrives in fringe worlds. |
